Our purpose with this documentary was to give JaggN a voice and
showcase their story and talent. Through humorous and deep moments, as well as
reflection on themselves, the band members were given a stage to show who they
were. The story followed the band as they discussed who they were, why they
began playing music, how the band began, and what their futures are going to
look like. This was shown heavily through interviews, with bits of B-Roll being
used throughout.
We used different B-Roll throughout
to showcase JaggN and their musical ability. We did this from the opening
montage to the final credits. There were videos of them playing at multiple
events and it added to the "rock vibe" we were trying to portray. In
addition, the music we used throughout the piece, "Enter Sandman" and
"Sweet Child O' Mine" were recorded and performed by JaggN
themselves.
We researched different documentary
styles as well as individual projects for our creation. One of our biggest
inspirations was New York Times' Op-Doc series. While editing, we tried to incorporate
a deep story while balancing the quick pacing and constant engagement. It
appears it worked, as there didn't seem to be many dull moments, similar to
most of the Op-Docs.
One of the most important parts of
this project was the target audience. Since the documentary was about teenage
rockstars, it only seems fitting that the target audience be their peers. We
wanted to market it to teens around 14-19 as they would be the most interested
and engaged. Furthermore, some jokes and references were made, and kept in, for
the amusement of these viewers. The five teenage subjects of the film helped
us to engage this target audience throughout the entire piece.
In a more specific sense, we
wanted to market it to high school students. This social group seemed like a
perfect audience since again, that's who JaggN is. The inclusion of inappropriate
jokes, cursing, rock music, and party scenes were aimed towards them as it
represented who they are and what they love. In addition, we wanted to portray
this close group of friends and how they live as a band.
We also worked to promote rock
music in a sense. Part of the reason we chose to use JaggN as the subject of
the music video was that, for a few months, people at our school have been engaged
and loving everything about them. We realized that they had the ability to bring
the rock genre to the attention of teenagers and we wanted to be able to
capture that. We asked them about why they started playing and how it made them
feel to be on stage "rocking out." The answers didn't disappoint, and
we got valuable information.
There were, of course, pieces of
the documentary that we could have done better. For example, there were audio
parts that didn't blend well with each other. In addition, there could have
been more B-Roll to showcase JaggN as much as we could. In further editing, we
have changed this and made the production flow much better. However, the
overall story and connection of the interviews fit very nicely and introduced the
band very well.
Overall, we clearly represented an audience group and social class while engaging audiences in a greatly talented rock rand. We were able to examine the subjects deeply and use it to show our target demographic that the members of JaggN are just like them.
