JaggN Critical Reflection

The documentary titled "JaggN" was created to introduce a band in a creative and informative way. The documentary worked with an overall theme of creating music through passion. With mostly non-direct interviews, my group members and I were able to showcase this band and let them explain who they are.

Our purpose with this documentary was to give JaggN a voice and showcase their story and talent. Through humorous and deep moments, as well as reflection on themselves, the band members were given a stage to show who they were. The story followed the band as they discussed who they were, why they began playing music, how the band began, and what their futures are going to look like. This was shown heavily through interviews, with bits of B-Roll being used throughout.

We used different B-Roll throughout to showcase JaggN and their musical ability. We did this from the opening montage to the final credits. There were videos of them playing at multiple events and it added to the "rock vibe" we were trying to portray. In addition, the music we used throughout the piece, "Enter Sandman" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" were recorded and performed by JaggN themselves.

We researched different documentary styles as well as individual projects for our creation. One of our biggest inspirations was New York Times' Op-Doc series. While editing, we tried to incorporate a deep story while balancing the quick pacing and constant engagement. It appears it worked, as there didn't seem to be many dull moments, similar to most of the Op-Docs.

One of the most important parts of this project was the target audience. Since the documentary was about teenage rockstars, it only seems fitting that the target audience be their peers. We wanted to market it to teens around 14-19 as they would be the most interested and engaged. Furthermore, some jokes and references were made, and kept in, for the amusement of these viewers. The five teenage subjects of the film helped us to engage this target audience throughout the entire piece.

In a more specific sense, we wanted to market it to high school students. This social group seemed like a perfect audience since again, that's who JaggN is. The inclusion of inappropriate jokes, cursing, rock music, and party scenes were aimed towards them as it represented who they are and what they love. In addition, we wanted to portray this close group of friends and how they live as a band.

We also worked to promote rock music in a sense. Part of the reason we chose to use JaggN as the subject of the music video was that, for a few months, people at our school have been engaged and loving everything about them. We realized that they had the ability to bring the rock genre to the attention of teenagers and we wanted to be able to capture that. We asked them about why they started playing and how it made them feel to be on stage "rocking out." The answers didn't disappoint, and we got valuable information.

There were, of course, pieces of the documentary that we could have done better. For example, there were audio parts that didn't blend well with each other. In addition, there could have been more B-Roll to showcase JaggN as much as we could. In further editing, we have changed this and made the production flow much better. However, the overall story and connection of the interviews fit very nicely and introduced the band very well.

Overall, we clearly represented an audience group and social class while engaging audiences in a greatly talented rock rand. We were able to examine the subjects deeply and use it to show our target demographic that the members of JaggN are just like them.

JaggN Production

The “JaggN” documentary was a success.

PRE-PRODUCTION:

We had the idea to use “JaggN” when we heard about the project. The lead singer is a close friend of ours and we have been engaged with the band for months. We immediately started brainstorming the different ways we could navigate them. We were thinking of a rockumentary, and covering them before and during an upcoming event, but we decided to just introduce them and explain their story. We drew out a story and started filming within the next few days.

FILMING:

We filmed everything in the matter of a day. We went to one of the subjects houses, Justin, and got all of the footage we needed. All of the interviews took place there and some B-Roll was shot there as well. The B-Roll we used of the party scenes and past performances were all filmed by one of us three at previous times. They were at Homecoming and previous parties. When we got to the house, we set everything up, told them the entire process and we were set! They filmed their interviews and “jammed out” so we were able to get everything done, and enjoy listening to them. We even got two full clips of them playing covers that we ended up using in the final product.

POST-PRODUCTION/EDITING:

We started editing immediately after filming. It took us about a week to completely finish it and we’re proud of what we ended up with. I edited all of the audio and synced all the clips together. We then added the B-Roll on top of it. This was probably the most difficult part of the whole process. It was the most time consuming but rewarding at the same time. We added all of the text after syncing, just to make it easier for us. The last thing we did was taking the audio clips from them performing, isolated it, and used it as the intro and outro music. Both “Enter Sandman” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” we’re performed by then.

IM DONE!!!!!

While I am so excited to finally be done with this project, it truly was an amazing experience. I loved making this film and it was overall SO enjoyable. I learned a lot more than I thought I would and it was a great project.

I’m excited for my critiques coming up to see any opinions I get from other people and to see my final grade.

Thank you all so much for keeping up with the journey, I truly, truly hope you enjoyed my project!!!!

Peace out from Jack… it’s time to chill.

COMPLETED CCR!!!

I HAVE FINISHED MY CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION!!!!! I genuinely had a lot of fun making this and I am happy with how it turned out.

FINAL PROJECT

I am so happy to finally type out these words:

My portfolio project is finally done!!!!!

I am so excited for all of you to see it and this has been such an amazing journey for me. I hope you love watching it as much as I loved making it.

CCR

I am beginning to work on one of the most important aspects of the projects itself, the Creative Critical Reflection. The CCR shows how much effort has gone in and the thoughts behind every stylistic choice.

While explaining this, I also have to respond to the 4 questions.

I have written out my script, but have not yet begun filming it. I want to focus on editing and completing the opening itself before the CCR, so I can focus on each one as much as I can.

I am going for the aspect of a more comedic take on the CCR, to avoid boredom. I am going to have as much fun with it as I can so the audience pays attention. I was thinking about filming it in my backyard, in a suit, and pretending like it was a business meeting. I am treating it as if it is a skit, while also providing the necessary information to get a good grade.

I truly am going to have a lot of fun with this aspect and I have decided to film it tomorrow, as I am almost done with editing the project itself!

Editing

I have began editing my project. I am using Adobe Premier Pro and I am happy with how it is turning out.

It took me a little while to learn how to use Premier, but I understand now and it is easier than I thought it would be.

The way the shots line up, it is very easy to edit and combine the shots. For adding music, it took some research but I got it. Since I am using “Ave Maria” I could choose from many different versions. I decided on “Ave Maria, D. 839” by Franz Schubert and RenĂ©e Fleming. I had to use the Voice Memos app on my phone to copy the song, as I couldn’t download it. From there, I added the track to the editing sequence and voila! It worked perfectly.

I am almost done, as I realized Premier really was easy to use, and I should have my final product done by tomorrow.

I attached pictures of the software and how my clips are lined up throughout.
